Go from Ukraine to Japan
The last week of Folklorama will let residents of and visitors to north Winnipeg sample the beauty of cultures from Kyiv to Kyoto.
From Aug. 11 to 17, the Ukraine-Kyiv pavilion will bring the cuisine and culture of Ukraine to Garden City Collegiate at 711 Jefferson Ave. Visitors to the pavilion can sample delicious varenyky and take in the colourful designs of Ukrainian traditional costumes and tapestries, as well as enjoy its exciting dances.
At St. Joseph’s Parish Hall (515 College Ave.), the Japanese pavilion will showcase taiko drumming, dance groups and martial arts demonstrations. Visitors can also leave a wish at the "wishing tree" and take in the pavilion’s Tanabata, or Star Festival. While at the pavilion, sample miso soup, Japanese-style noodles and sushi.
At Burton Cummings Community Centre (960 Arlington St.), the Tamil pavilion will celebrate its 15th year with folk dances and culinary delights such as curries, samosas, and mango juice. Those who check out the pavilion’s cultural display will have the chance to learn how to write their name in Tamil, one of the world’s oldest living languages.
