Great Dames and Dudes walk on
Every year, the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation runs Challenge for Life, a fundraising/awareness event whereby walkers commit to raising $1,000 for CancerCare Manitoba, while also taking an active role in maintaining their physical health, thus reducing their risk of getting cancer.
This year, Challenge for Life culminates on June 8 with a 20 kilometre walk, beginning and ending at Assiniboine Park.
Jan Shute is taking the Challenge for the fifth time. The manager of sponsorship and promotions at Maxim Truck & Trailer walks with her co-workers in a team dubbed The Maxim Great Dames and Dudes. According to Shute, the Great Dames and Dudes have raised in excess of $220,000 for CancerCare Manitoba so far.
"In 2012, we had six walkers lace up, including our president, Doug Harvey," Shute says. "We also had 14 hard-working volunteers on setup, tear down and transportation and 14 more enthusiastic volunteers cheering on the walkers at the Maxim-sponsored check stop. These volunteers all make a huge difference and we are proud of all involved who are making difference today and creating hope for tomorrow."
In addition to individual fundraising, Maxim makes money for CancerCare Manitoba through a chocolate bar sale and a huge company barbecue, with this year’s event slated for May 29, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Shute says the barbecue attracts approximately 550 guests and that last year it raised more than $11,000.
"Knowing that our dollars go to research, clinical trials, support staff, education and prevention and screening programs is very encouraging to us at Maxim," Shute says.
As far as the individual fundraising, Shute says raising a $1,000 was a bit intimidating at first, but turned out to be quite easy.
"When you ask people, everybody steps up to the plate because it’s really impossible to find anybody that hasn’t been touched by cancer," Shute says. "It’s very inspiring."
