Looking for a little help
Burrows centre needs board members, volunteers
Jessica Isidro has a lot on her plate these days, and she’s hoping some folks in the community can lend a hand.
The Burrows Resource Centre, located at 1100 College Ave., offers a wide variety of programs, including a partnership with the Burrows Boys and Girls Club, which runs Mondays and Wednesdays after school, as well as kids crafts and computer lab programs.
Isidro, chair of the Burrows Central Residents Council, said there is a real need for additional board members and volunteers. The lack of volunteers has made it tough for the centre to operate all of its programming.
"We used to have a family movie night, and it’s fallen on top of two main volunteers’ shoulders. It’s just too much for them to do every week," she said.
Isidro would like to see the centre offer longer hours of operation and open more often than it presently does.
"We need to increase our volunteer base so we can keep these doors open, not just in the evenings, but during the days and weekends. That’s probably one of our end goals," Isidro said.
A regular board member before her latest appointment, Isidro became chair in October, and has since been working with past chair Irene McConachy, also the group’s secretary and treasurer for now, to learn the ropes.
"There’s a lot to know, just with the history," Isidro said.
The centre needs a vice-chair, and Isidro said the board would also like to split up the secretary and treasurer duties into two separate roles to lighten McConachy’s load. Isidro also hopes to see more members added to the board.
"We’d like to have a local business rep," she said.
As for volunteers, they’re needed to help with everything from the kids crafting program to volunteering at fundraising events and operating the canteen.
Isidro said new volunteers are asked to devote as much time as they can, even if it’s only a couple of hours a month.
Anyone interested can contact Isidro at (204) 803-5100 or by e-mail at brc@mts.net.
