Happy Malanka!

Garden City Shopping Centre (2305 McPhillips St.) holds its 19th annual Ukrainian New Year event on Sat., Jan. 18.

The all-day celebration of the Orthodox New Year (which is actually Tues., Jan. 14) will feature live entertainment and cultural displays, including traditional dance from Zoloto Ukrainian Dance Ensemble & Company, the main component of Folklorama’s Spirit of Ukraine pavilion.

"Zoloto has been doing (the mall’s Malanka celebration) every year since it began, and we’re happy to be a part of the show once again," said Spirit of Ukraine co-ordinator Scott Gordon.

The mall’s Malanka festivities will be split into three showtimes: 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Zoloto performs at 3 p.m.

In addition to dance, there will be traditional cuisine, arts and crafts, a bake sale and educational information booths.
