New HQ for constituency office
Last week, I was honoured to host the grand opening of the new Point Douglas constituency office at 804 Selkirk Avenue.
It was wonderful to see over 100 people come out for the ribbon cutting ceremony and visit our new location at the corner of Selkirk and Arlington Street.
When I was elected in the fall of 2011 as MLA for Point Douglas, I wanted our office to be on Selkirk Avenue, in the heart of our constituency. We have moved two doors down from our first office at 788 Selkirk Avenue to our new location to increase accessibility and to serve people better.
Our constituency office is a community hub that helps connect people to different programs and services. Our team is here to help with your issues and concerns.
The building at 804 Selkirk offers a fascinating glimpse into a part of the history of the North End. The building permit was issued by the City of Winnipeg in 1919 to the Merchant’s Bank of Canada. As one of the first financial institutions to locate on Selkirk Avenue the building was a clear signal of the growth of our community. The branch was subsequently taken over by the Bank of Montreal.
Many of you will know this building as the former Ukrainian Mutual Benefit Association of St. Nicholas (UMBA). The UMBA started in 1905 and worked as a fraternal organization to help out immigrant families arriving in Canada from Ukraine. The UMBA bought the 804 Selkirk Avenue building from the Bank of Montreal in 1942. In 2012, the UMBA merged with the Ukrainian Fraternal Society of Canada Life Insurance and joined their offices on McGregor Street.
The North End has always been a place of new beginnings as people from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds have come here to build new lives for their families. We are proud that our new office will continue to be part of that tradition.
