North End doctor relocates his family practice

  • Print

A medical clinic has opened its doors at 354 Selkirk Ave., at the corner of Selkirk and Aikins Street. The building, which housed the North End Bike Shop for decades, and most recently, the photography studio of Rodney Braun, underwent a rapid transformation in mid-November.

For Dr. Tai Huu Dang, it is a return to where he began. In 1992, after finishing his internship at St. Boniface Hospital, Dang began his family practice at 293 Selkirk. His clinic has moved several times since, but always within the North End. Dang’s dedication to his 3,000 regular patients prevents him from doing his job elsewhere.

What does he consider his job to be?

When he boils it down, it is this: to provide care for people in need. There are great demands in the North End, but Dang finds great satisfaction in doing "frontline medicine" by promoting lifestyle change, proper management of chronic disease, and prevention of disease.

Sometimes he counsels young people through drug abuse, personal issues, and unexpected pregnancy. He recognizes the need for immediate care in many situations, and ensures he’s done all he can before referring patients to his network of specialists and paramedical professionals. Regardless of the needs a patient has, one thing is crucial, according to Dang.

"I need to be able to build trust", he says.

That trust likely grows in the fertile soil of Dang’s caring attitude, good-natured spirit, and warm smile.

How does he remain positive and energetic after 20 years in a busy medical clinic? Balance.  Dang takes his evenings and weekends off to spent time with his wife and two teenage boys.

He enjoys badminton, tennis, golf, and travelling back to Vietnam to see family and donate medical services for charity.

Dang plans to stay in the community for a long time yet. Although he is not accepting new long-term patients, walk-ins are welcome. Dang’s clinic is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  He can be reached at 204-586-6655.
