Nurse honoured by peers

A nurse working out of Seven Oaks General Hospital (SOGH) has been picked for a prestigious award.

Crist "Cris" Gomez, who has worked as a nurse since arriving in Canada from the Philippines in 1969, has been named Critical Care Nurse of the Year by the Manitoba chapter of the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses. The award was presented to Gomez during the chapter’s annual general meeting on Feb. 19.

According to a release issued by SOGH, Gomez has been a critical care nurse there since 2003 and has been nurse manager for its intensive care unit since 2008.

"Peer recognition is the highest recognition you can get in your career . . . it is so humbling," Gomez states in the release.

Gomez was nominated by Blair Stevenson, a nurse at the hospital and its program director for emergency and ICU. In the release, Stevenson lauds her as a worker who "rolls up her sleeves and works shoulder to shoulder with her team at ICU."
