Play a timely message on bullying
Nasty rumours, racy secrets and the rest of the usual high school gossip.
On April 25 and 26, students at Maples Collegiate will dig up and dish out the dirt as they perform an adaptation of the 2004 Lindsay Lohan comedy Mean Girls.
The play, the film inspiration for which made $130 million at the box office, follows 16-year-old Cady, who, after being mostly home-schooled, finds herself quickly climbing the social ladder of high school. As she tries to infiltrate the most popular clique in the school, the Plastics, Cady risks losing her friends and becoming a bully in the process.
Grade 10 student Arabella Robles, who plays Cady’s best friend Janis, said the production has an important and timely message about bullying.
"Even though it’s about bullying, we’re trying to put it off as how people can change if they try," Robles said.
Grade 12 student Jerone Verga, who plays school hunk and romantic lead Aaron Samuels, says the play gives students insight into how bullying is more than just physical — it can be verbal and emotional, too.
"People need to realize there are many ways to bully someone and different ways it affects people," Verga said.
There are about 42 students in the cast and another four working crew positions. Maples drama teacher Lindsay Brown said the school alternates between historical canon and modern works for its productions.
Choosing Mean Girls was an opportunity to showcase the department’s female talent, she said.
"We were looking for something that had a lot of opportunity for our girls to be in leading positions," said Brown.
Performances run April 25 and 26 at 7 p.m. in the theatre at Maples Collegiate. The school is located at 1330 Jefferson Ave.
Tickets are $10 or $5 for students, and are available at the door.
