The St. John’s Resident’s Association has decided a bit of restructuring is in order as it tackles community issues going forward.
In late January, the association held a community consultation at Win Gardner Place to determine what the community felt the group’s priorities should be.
One of the first changes resulting from that consultation is the merger of its safety and housing committees.
"This way we have more volunteers focusing on the issues. Having two separate committees really kind of (ties) our volunteers up," association chair Madelaine Dwyer said.
Safety and housing go together naturally, she said, and the merger should give them chances to "move forward with things quicker, get our productivity up."
"It’s less overlap, mainly," she adds.
In addition, the association has changed its meeting location to Win Gardner Place for the next few months, starting in April. Meetings take place the third Wednesday of every month, starting at 7 p.m.
"It’s just to see if we can get a larger turnout," Dwyer said.
The consultation also led the association to determine there needs to be more recreational opportunities in the area, so they’re working with Ralph Brown Community Centre to see how programming can be expanded.
"There’s a big push on that from our surveys we’ve put out," Dwyer said.
"They’ve got a lot of evening programming (at Ralph Brown), but daytime and senior programming and skill building stuff for youth and adults (is needed)."
The association is currently in the midst of applying for grants, and plans to go ahead with some of its usual programming, like its "Four Season" contest. The association is also planning to put on more personal workshops to teach "skills people can use throughout the community."
