Burrows MLA Constituency Report: Ribbon cut on new clinic
As an MLA who still considers herself new (my predecessor having been in office for 21 years!), I was thrilled to be able to introduce Premier Greg Selinger at the grand opening of the ACCESS NorWest Clinic on April 25.
I had the privilege of cutting the ribbon alongside Health Minister Theresa Oswald and the premier for this valuable community project.
ACCESS NorWest is a beautiful new facility located at Keewatin and Burrows. At $4.7-million dollars, it was a major investment by our government and I’m grateful that the dream of ACCESS NorWest is now a reality.
Paul Walker said: "You know, all that really matters is that the people you love are happy and healthy. Everything else is just sprinkles on the sundae." Sometimes this doesn’t hit home until someone we love is in need of excellent health care. Then everything else dims, for a time, in comparison.
The beauty of the ACCESS Centre is that it’s a "one-stop shop" with nearly 100 front line professionals available, including doctors, nurse practitioners, diabetes support, mental health workers, EIA services, family violence counselling, and immigrant women’s counselling, just to name a few.
On a tour, I spoke to a new staff member in mental health and she was effusive in her praise. She said the atmosphere was unlike anything she had experienced before — a true community of workers dedicated to improving the lives of their clients.
The centre has lab services available to anyone, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, so if you have your slip from a health care provider and need some lab work, this is an excellent option.
The centre serves portions of the Burrows constituency. Primary care providers at the ACCESS Centre are currently accepting new patients. To find out if you are in the catchment area and/or to make an appointment, call 204-938-5900.
In other health news, I am pleased to tell you that in Burrows constituency we have defibrillators located in The Maples Community Centre, Maples Multiplex and the Northwood Community Centre, as well as other locations.
If you are interested in talking further about the ACCESS Centre or anything else, please give me a call, or send an email. You can also stay up to date with what I am doing by going to www.melaniewight.ca or www.facebook.com/melaniewightmla
