A surgeon at Seven Oaks Hospital is being recognized for his contributions to medical education in the community.
Last week, the Professional Association of Residents and Interns Manitoba (PARIM) handed Dr. David Reimer with its Off-Site Educator of the Year award, which recognizes the education training physicians provide to medical interns in hospitals, their practices and rural and remote areas around the province.
Doctors are judged across several categories including the quality of patient care, the quality of teaching and the interest shown in the personal development of their trainees.
Reimer, who serves as head of general surgery at Seven Oaks and performs elective surgery and endoscopy there and at Concordia Hospital, called the award a "real surprise."
"I have been involved in resident training for some time, but have often wondered how the trainees view their experience with me," Reimer said in a statement.
Reimer also works as part of the acute care surgical team at St. Boniface Hospital.
Reimer said teaching residents helps keep him on his toes and looking for ways to improve his patient care.
"I get more out of the experience than I put in," he said.
