Area hair stylist has some really big dreams
Taylor Wilgosh, a junior stylist at Riverbend Studio for Hair, was raised in a tight-knit community outside of Winnipeg. She adores Riverbend and Rivergrove because her clients consist of families and are down to earth.
Taylor began working at Riverbend Studio two and a half years ago while she was in Grade 12 at Miles Macdonell Collegiate. She was part of the Cosmetology diploma program offered at the high school.
"I’ve been crazy about hair my whole life," Taylor said, "And my parents really encouraged me to focus on it."
Taylor has a passion for cutting and creating new styles for her clients. She also thrives on the vibe surrounding bridal parties. "The pressure is on but it is a good kind of pressure," she exclaimed.
Taylor is appreciative of the vocational education that she received while in high school. "I didn’t have spares in high school because I was taking extra classes but it was worth it in the end because I learned a trade," she said.
The training Taylor received is the same curriculum as private hair schools except that it is spread out over the course of three years. She stressed it is considerably less expensive to learn a trade while in high school.
Maples Collegiate in the Seven Oaks School Division offers diploma programs in automotive, aviation, culinary, hospitality, and health care.
Across the Red River in northeast Winnipeg, Kildonan East Collegiate offers 11 different programs ranging from electrical to photography. Miles MacDonell Collegiate also offers health and childcare.
The ongoing learning in the hair industry greatly appeals to Taylor. Hair shows are a big portion of the learning process as well as classes offered by suppliers.
Taylor has attended shows in Winnipeg and spoke about the largest hair show in North America which takes place in Las Vegas, Nev. that she hopes to attend one day.
Taylor is currently attending the University of Winnipeg, working part time towards a bachelor of arts in business. Her plans for the future involve staying within the hair industry, whether it is working at hair shows or owning a salon. "I would love to own a salon one day," Taylor declared, "I dream big!"
Riverbend Studio for Hair is located at 8-2605 Main St. You may contact the salon at 204-339-1420.
