Become an organ donor, help save a life
I am extremely passionate about organ donation. I want to make everyone aware of what being an organ donor really means.
My goal is to get people to go to the web site signupforlife.ca and to become potential donors. I want people to get the organs they are waiting for. I want to help save lives. Even if only one life is saved I will have accomplished something truly great — together we will have accomplished something truly great.
I am waiting for a kidney after being on the list for three-and-a-half years and it is a long, hard wait. That is why I am so passionate about the subject. I know how needing an organ affects not only the person waiting for the organ but also how it affects their families.
I am so lucky to have three amazing people in my life. My family. I don’t think I could go on without them. They keep me strong. They are always there for me, helping out with my treatments and taking care of me. But still it is hard on them, seeing the mental and physical struggle I go through each day. The restrictions that I have to follow. My children only know me as having a machine to keep me alive. I hope to change that in the very near future.
The reality is that you, reading this article, could one day need an organ, too.
Take some time today and check out the website signupforlife.ca and see what it is all about. Hopefully we can keep the number of donors rising.
I have had the opportunity to meet some incredible people who have been lucky enough to have received their transplants. A woman who received a heart that saved her life. A man who had a kidney transplant over 35 years ago (and the same kidney is still going strong). It is amazing to know that two people saved their lives by being organ donors. They gave someone else the chance to live.
If becoming an organ donor is not something you are ready to do you can help in other ways. On Thursday, Feb. 28, from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., Transplant Manitoba will host a bake sale in the William Avenue Mall at Health Sciences Centre. Come down, get something sweet to eat and help raise money for organ donation at the same time.
I am determined to make everyone aware. I may drive you crazy but I am going to keep pushing the matter. Maybe it will help save the life of someone you love.
