Store promotes pet adoption

  • Print

Throughout April, Pet Valu stores across Canada took part in Pet Appreciation Month. The Rivergrove location worked diligently to promote and plan activities and fundraised for donations of pet supplies and money.

During National Adoption Weekend, Rivergrove hosted a barbecue and invited community members and customers to take part in the festivities. Hi-Speed Hounds and Manitoba Mutts were among two of the non-profit organizations at the store. Dogs that were available for adoption were with their foster families and the public was encouraged to meet the dogs and ask questions about fostering and adoption.

Hi-Speed Hounds is a local greyhound rescue organization. In parts of the United States, greyhound racing is prominent and when a greyhound is no longer able to race or breed, his or her purpose is considered over. Hi-Speed Hounds steps in to foster these dogs and ultimately find them a ‘forever home.’ Greyhounds are described as gentle giants and do not need much exercise beyond one or two walks a day and a fenced back yard.

One physical adoption resulted from the Rivergrove event — from Manitoba Mutts — and another family expressed strong interest in becoming a foster family.

The focus of Manitoba Mutts is to give dogs a second chance at living happily ever after.

Manitoba Mutts has an outstanding calendar of events and fundraisers to help the cause.
The Rivergrove Pet Valu raised $5,415.33 during April, surpassing its original goal of $5,000. The money was raised on behalf of FFFAS (Friends Fundraising for Animal Shelters), which helps to fund veterinarian costs at no-kill shelters. The money raised here will be spent on spaying and neutering in rural Manitoba through the Manitoba Mobile Vet Clinic.

Gaylene Robertson, manager at Rivergrove Pet Valu plans to host monthly adoption fairs with Hi-Speed Hounds, Manitoba Mutts, and the many other rescue organizations in Winnipeg.

Please stay tuned to find out when they will be. Donations of pet supplies are graciously accepted year round at all Pet Valu locations.
