Every year CancerCare Manitoba Foundation runs Challenge for Life — a one-day fundraising/awareness event. Participants commit to raising $500 for CancerCare Manitoba while taking an active role in maintaining their physical health and reducing their personal cancer risks.
The 2017 Challenge for Life will take place on Sat., June 10, when Challenge for Life 2.0 participants can "walk it" for 20 kilometres beginning and ending at Assiniboine Park, or they can "work it" by taking part in a 200-minute workout in the Park featuring aerobics to zumba and everything in between.
(Bear in mind that it’s not 200 continuous minutes of exercise. There will be breaks, snacks and a variety of exercises such as yoga, CrossFit and aerobics, to name a few.)
Angela Morelli feels passionate about supporting CancerCare Manitoba through the Challenge for Life.
"CancerCare does absolutely wonderful work," she said. "I have many family members and friends that have been touched by cancer."
Morelli, is a part of Great-West Life’s Heroic Feet team, a play on words that recognizes the feat their feet achieve by walking and raising money for cancer care.
Heading into her 10th walk, Morelli counts herself as lucky.
"I have not personally been touched by cancer," she said. "I feel that while fundraising and walking may be difficult, it is nothing compared to the challenges that people with cancer face every day. I continue to participate for those that can’t… because I can."
Morelli said she loves the gathering in the morning just prior to the walk, an atmosphere filled with excitement.
"I love arriving at the Great-West Life check stop with my entire Great-West corporate team," she said. "This is always emotional for us. We pose for pictures under the GW banner, we rest and enjoy the people and the fantastic music.
And the food…
"Ironically, I put on weight every year at this 20-kilometre walk," she said.
