New candidates enter River Heights, Elmwood council races
WINNIPEG - A right-of-centre candidate has emerged to challenge rookie Coun. John Orlikow in River Heights-Fort Garry this fall.
Small businessman Michael Kowalson, a card-carrying Conservative who owns a pair of Subway franchises, registered his campaign at the city clerk’s office today.
He is vying to be the fifth councillor to represent the ward since 2004, when Garth Steek resigned his seat to run for mayor.
Former Glen Murray staffer Donald Benham won the byelection, but was defeated by Tory organizer Brenda Leipsic in 2006. She died of cancer in 2008 and was succeed by Orlikow, a Liberal-affiliated former school trustee, in a 2009 byelection.
Also today, a second candidate entered the race to replace retiring Elmwood-East Kildonan Coun. Lillian Thomas.
Nelson Sanderson, who appeared before council earlier this year to support the Youth for Christ centre on Main Street, joined school trustee Rod Giesbrecht in the contest to succeed Thomas, who plans to retire from council this October after serving for 21 years.
Thomas endorsed her executive assistant Darryl Livingstone as her successor, but he lost an NDP endorsement vote to former CTV reporter Shaneen Robinson. Giesbrecht also competed in that contest.
Robinson, however, has yet to register her campaign.
Registration for council and mayoral candidates is open until Sept. 21.
The civic election takes place Oct. 27.
