Firefighter union picks Havixbeck for council
The United Fire Firefighters of Winnipeg have endorsed one of three potential candidates in the wide-open city council race in Charleswood-Tuxedo.
The Winnipeg firefighters’ union has endorsed Paula Havixbeck, who is also expected to receive Progressive Conservative support in the race.
Other potential candidates include the Liberal-affiliated Cheryl Conley-Strange and former radio personality Jarret Hannah, who now runs a marketing company.
The Charleswood ward has no incumbent following the cancer-related death of long-time Coun. Bill Clement.
Registration for council candidates begins on June 30.
The UFFW endorsement has been called a "kiss of death" in recent years, following the election losses of UFFW-endorsed council candidates Kelly de Groot (St. Charles, 2006), Franco Magnifico (St. Boniface, 2006) and Geoff Currier (River Heights-Fort Garry, 2009 byelection) as well as UFFW-endorsed NDP leadership hopeful Steve Ashton, who lost to Greg Selinger in 2009.
