NDP refuses to support veteran councillor

KEITH Bellamy, a constituency assistant to Winnipeg Centre MP Pat Martin, will receive the NDP's endorsement to run in Daniel McIntyre ward in this fall's civic election.

On Wednesday night, veteran city councillor Harvey Smith was unsuccessful in challenging a decision in March by a community committee of NDP officials to endorse Bellamy. Smith's appeal was heard by the party's provincial executive at a special meeting in Winnipeg.

"The majority of the executive committee felt that the process was (properly) followed," party president Lorraine Sigurdson said last night.

She said Smith had complained that he had not been able to obtain a list of party members on time in order to petition them to hold a ward meeting that would have decided whom to endorse. But Sigurdson said the executive felt that Smith had enough time to rectify any problems he may have had in obtaining a membership list. She said he wouldn't have been denied such a list after filling out the necessary paperwork.

Bellamy received the party's nod in Daniel McIntyre after a community endorsement committee (CEC), comprised of representatives from the provincial constituencies that overlap the city ward, interviewed both him and Smith.

Party rules allow for the CEC process to be bypassed and a nominating meeting held in a ward, for instance, if a candidate is able to petition 20 per cent of the members to hold such a meeting.
