Smith takes time to weigh options

DANIEL McIntyre Coun. Harvey Smith says he will take a few more days to decide whether he will run for re-election this fall in the wake of the provincial NDP's decision to endorse another candidate in his ward.

Late last month, the NDP endorsed Keith Bellamy, a constituency assistant to Winnipeg Centre MP Pat Martin, as a candidate in Daniel McIntyre.

Smith appeared before party officials Wednesday to appeal the endorsement, but did not succeed in changing their minds.

On Friday, Smith said he may pursue other avenues to appeal the decision. He said he will take a few days to decide whether he will run without a party endorsement.

Smith has sat on city council for 18 years, first from 1980 to 1986 and then from 1998 until the present. He also served as an NDP MLA in the 1980s.

Bellamy ran Coun. John Orlikow's campaign during the 2009 River Heights-Fort Garry byelection.
