Elmwood-EK council hopeful gets head start

Signs supporting city council candidate Rod Giesbrecht appear on Henderson Highway homeowners’ lawns Wednesday.
When it comes to getting your name out, Elmwood-East Kildonan council candidate Rod Giesbrecht is the publicity bird who's snagged the proverbial worm.
The school trustee, who's vying to succeed the retiring Lillian Thomas in the northeast Winnipeg ward, had NDP-orange signs up on Henderson Highway properties on Wednesday, three days before the city is expected to bloom with campaign advertising.
Winnipeg's electoral rules prevent signs from going up on public property until this Saturday. But there's nothing to prevent candidates from getting a head start on private property, provided the signs in question conform to city bylaws, said senior election official Marc Lemoine.
Giesbrecht is up against Shaneen Robinson, who has the NDP nomination for the ward, as well as Nelson Sanderson. Former Winnipeg Jet and federal Conservative candidate Thomas Steen is also expected to enter the race, but has not registered.
Giesbrecht, who was kicked out of the NDP after he registered to run for council, is disputing the party's contention his departure from the orange and black was automatic when he chose to run even though he lost the party nomination to Robinson.
He claims he was removed in August. The Elmwood-East Kildonan nomination meeting was held in June.
