U of M partners with Israeli university to study FASD

WINNIPEG - The province has earmarked $750,000 for a new FASD research partnership between the University of Manitoba and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

NDP ministers announced the money Monday morning at the legislature, saying the cash will help discover how fetal alcohol spectrum disorder affects children.

In a series that began Saturday, the Free Press has found that FASD is a largely invisible disease that costs Canadians at least $5.3 billion a year.

FASD is mired in stigma and often condemns sufferers to a lifetime of stuggle with crime, poverty and failure.
