Joy Smith takes Kildonan-St. Paul

Metropolitan Winnipeg's northernmost riding can expect a few more years of Joy, as Conservative Joy Smith has won her fourth trip tp Ottawa.

Kildonan-St. Paul remains in Tory hands after Smith dispatched NDP candidate Rachelle Devine, leading by more than 1,000 votes at press time.

In 2008, Smith outdistanced the NDP by 7,658 votes in the riding, which encompasses the northern reaches of Winnipeg as well as bedroom communities to the north.

There were plenty of hugs and congratulations being exchanged in Joy Smith's campaign office, well before the results of her fourth re-election had been announced.

"I was confident about this, but not too confident," said Smith, who arrived late to the count after spending the evening delivering meals to her campaign staff.

"You never know what's going to happen in a campaign. I've worked so hard over the past seven years, and I hope that means something to the constituents. This is really about the people."

Smith has represented Kildonan-St. Paul since its inception in 2004. She was also re-elected in 2006 and 2008.

Liberal Victor Andres, Alon Weinberg of the Greens and indeoendent candidates Eduard Hiebert and Brett Ryall also ran against Smith this year.
