Neville concedes in Winnipeg South Centre
Long-time Winnipeg South Liberal MP Anita Neville has conceded defeat.
"Let me first say what an extraordinary privilege it’s been to serve the residents of Winnipeg South Centre for the last 10 and a half years," she said.
In what could be the local upset of the election, Liberal-turned-Conservative Joyce Bateman has defeated Neville in Winnipeg South Centre.
Despite a quiet campaign that was late out of the gate and marked my mini-missteps, Bateman cruised to victory thanks in part to the national NDP surge and the collapse of the Liberal vote across Canada.
Neville and Bateman were in a neck-and-neck race much of the night, but Bateman surged ahead by roughly 1,000 votes. The NDP earned more than 20 percent of the vote in the affluent riding, stealing mostly from Neville.
