Premier Greg Selinger unveiled Manitoba's latest weapon in the flood fight today - the bastion.
The folding, reusable metal cages look like big dog kennels are about the same size as a large, rectangular hay bale, but are filled with sand.
They can be deployed quickly to form a flood protection wall instead of sandbags.
The province is getting about 43 kilometres on the bastions or cages, and they will be sent out to where they are needed this spring.
Manitoba is expecting a flood on par with 2009 with an increased flood risk in western parts of the province, most notably along the Assiniboine River.
The degree of flooding depends on the rate of the spring thaw, which starts in a matter of days.
The flood risk is higher this year because of the high amount of snow we had and the fact much of the ground is still saturated from last year's heavy rains.
