A total of 570 homes in the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie are threatened by floodwaters, Reeve Kam Blight said today.

About 300 homes north of the city of Portage la Prairie are threatened by spills from the Portage Diversion or flooding from Lake Manitoba, Blight said.

Members of the Canadian Armed Forces are helping protect 39 of those properties.

South of the city of Portage la Prairie, 256 homes are under voluntary evacuation orders, while another 14 homes near Hoop and Holler Bend are under mandatory evacuation orders.

As soon as Thursday at 8 a.m., the province may cut into Provincial Road 331 at Hoop and Holler Bend to relieve some of the pressure on the engorged Assiniboine River.

Blight warned that time is not set in stone.

Sandbagging is taking place around of properties near Hoop and Holler Bend, Newton and elsewhere in the rural municipality.

Anyone wishing to volunteer may report to the Portage Industrial Exhibition Centre in Island Park, Portage la Prairie.
