Lake St. Martin channel open
The Lake St. Martin emergency channel is open, Premier Greg Selinger said today.
The 6.5-kilometre channel is now funnelling flood water from Lake St. Martin into a huge marsh that drains into Buffalo Creek. A second channel is to be built from Buffalo Creek to Lake Winnipeg and will be operational before the spring.
The $100-million channel is needed to also lower the water level on a still-flooded Lake Manitoba in advance of next spring.
The province has said water from the channel will have negligible impact on water levels on Lake Winnipeg.
