High water on the Red River: Then and now
Compare this year’s river levels with levels during three major flood years.
River levels are measured in "feet James Avenue Datum," a City of Winnipeg elevation measurement based on long-term mean winter ice levels at James Avenue in downtown Winnipeg. This winter ice level is established at 727.57 feet above sea level, which is zero feet James Avenue Datum. Normal summer water levels at James Avenue are usually regulated by the St. Andrews Lock and Dam at approximately seven feet James. For more on the system, see the city’s website.
*Note: 1950 river levels are pre-Floodway.
