Private school known for hockey program cancels games to prevent flu spread

WILCOX, Sask. - A private school in Saskatchewan best known for its hockey team is dropping the gloves against the H1N1 flu.

The Athol Murray College of Notre Dame at Wilcox has had several students this week at the boarding school come down with flu-like symptoms.

There were a few confirmed cases of H1N1 prior to the Thanksgiving break.

Rob Palmarin, president of the co-ed, Grade 9 to 12 Catholic school, says the number of students with flu-like symptoms rose to 14 on Friday.

That's when officials decided to postpone all sporting events against other teams for five days.

Palmarin says things are improving - there were only seven children in health care on Saturday.

Notre Dame Hounds play in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and were supposed to host the Melville Millionaires Saturday night but that will be rescheduled.

Two other SJHL games will also have to be rescheduled due to the quasi-quarantine at Notre Dame.

The other sports at the college will be rescheduled.
