Young people worst hit

A new study of the first 1,000 California cases of H1N1 flu hospitalizations and death found the pandemic is disproportionately infecting young people.

The findings are reported in this week's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Among the study's findings: The median age of those hospitalized was 27 years; 32 per cent were younger than 18 years.

Among the 118 fatal cases, the aver- age time from the start of symptoms to death was 12 days.

Obesity is emerging as a risk factor.

More than half in the study were obese. The fatality rate was highest in people 50 and older.

More than one-third of adults hos- pitalized with H1N1 flu reported nausea or vomiting, and one-fifth reported diarrhea.

Babies under two months had the highest hospitalization rates, but are too young to receive the vaccine.
