H1N1 virus causing fewer ICU admissions

THE number of Manitobans with H1N1 being admitted to intensive care this fall continues to be much lower than during the virus's first wave this spring.

Manitoba Health reported Thursday that no one testing positive for H1N1 was admitted to an intensive care unit between Dec. 8 and 14.

In its final flu bulletin in 2009, the department said there have been 16 patients with lab-confirmed cases of H1N1 admitted to ICUs this fall, compared with 43 in the first wave.

Of the 16 cases this fall, more than three-quarters were aged 18 to 64. One-third of all Manitobans admitted to ICUs in the two H1N1 flu waves had no underlying health problems.

The department still encourages Manitobans to get the H1N1 flu shot, saying the virus continues to circulate within the province and it's expected that people will still get seriously ill from it.

Two-thirds of Manitobans have yet to be vaccinated.

Mass flu vaccination clinics in Winnipeg have closed. But city residents can still get the shot from their doctors or from community clinics. To book your flu shot at a Winnipeg clinic, call 788-8004.
