A device from the fifth dimension will help fringe-goers open their third eyes.

The Saints of British Rock -- the band appearing in a Fringe show named after itself -- claim they have returned from their multi-dimensional time-travelling adventures with the gift of Merlyn's Lightbox, a neurostimulation lamp that generates EEG wave patterns to help users achieve a state of transcendental bliss.

"Merlyn's Lightbox is technology we brought back from the future. It's about opening up your third eye, your fourth and fifth dimensional third eye consciousness," says the uni-monikered Jib, who plays bass with the Saints, a fictional rock band whose mockumentary-styled show runs nightly starting Thursday and running through July 28 at the West End Cultural Centre.

Merlyn's Lightbox is available for public use daily from noon to 6 p.m. in the vendor area of Old Market Square during the entire fringe run.

In the fringe show, the Lightbox was given to the band by the wizard Merlyn himself during a trip to the fifth dimension. Really it's a neurostimulation lamp that combines a variable speed flickering light known as a stroboscope with a constant light that can have its brightness adjusted.

According to a press release, the lamp generates EEG wave patterns "that normally only occur after several years of meditation practice" and can facilitate the same positive after-effects and experiences "that otherwise only occur in extreme situations," with closeness to death and consumption of entheogenic drugs used as examples.

Sounds far out. And totally rockin'.
