Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
Keir Cutler remounts the university-lecture-gone-wrong that introduced him to Winnipeg fringe audiences in 2001, as an inept professor flails and fails to make sense of the Bard’s works and his own deteriorating life. Part of the charm is how much how much valuable trivia Dr. Keir actually manages to pack into his inane rants and hero worship. (“Whatever we don’t like, we don’t understand.”)
The rest comes from Cutler’s smooth, practiced delivery, as he mines gentle laughs from a rich if predictable vein. It’s a piece he could clearly do in his sleep, and while the doctor’s scrabbling to find comfort in iambic pentameter still earns chuckles, the unscripted audience interaction earns the biggest laughs. The audience was howling from Cutler’s whip-smart retorts to his students’ answers and it was clear the performer himself got the most joy from the fresh material.
