Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
British Columbia magician Travis Bernhardt returns to the fringe with his trademark friendly patter and likable, self-deprecating approach, but this time he’s added something new to his bag of tricks: mindreading.
Bernhardt begins by discussing his growing interest in dream journals and semi-conscious writing, and shows examples of his own sleepy scrawls. Next, he takes an entire copy of the Free Press and tears away random sections chosen by the audience. Soon, only a small bit of paper remains, containing one word. Wanna bet it matches what Travis has scrawled on his notepad? You bet!
Overall, Bernhardt keeps the show moving nicely, alternating snappy card and ball tricks with longer mind-reading routines involving audience volunteers.
While some of these went on too long (“Yes, there is a point to all this!” he acknowledged more than once), the payoff was almost always worth the wait. Just a little editing would put Travis into magical higher-stars territory.
