You have to admire Vancouver’s Tom Hill and Devin Mackenzie, the duo behind Hip.Bang! Improv. They aren’t afraid of commitment.
With great physicality and clockwork comedic timing, the pair hinges an entire 45-minute show on a single word. On the night I attended, we learned that Hill and Mackenzie — along with many Winnipeggers — are working with a pretty loose definition of the word "oxymoron," but no matter, it was hilarious nonetheless. Whether they were kings with human capes, or magicians who make the sun explode, or Macaulay Culkin and Miley Cyrus, Hill and Mackenzie committed to their scenes, cracking us (and themselves) up. The two play off each other so well; the effortless shorthand between them is impressive to behold. They know exactly when a scene has run its course, and they find ingenious ways to change it up.
High-energy and entertaining, Hip.Bang! should be on any improv fan’s must-fringe list.
