It’s hard to know if Japanese clown Hiromi Yano, a slender and colourfully costumed beauty in her 30s, works in an Asian theatrical tradition or merely an international one.

But her prop- and sound-effects-filled one-woman show is surprisingly entertaining. It’s as though she was bumped from Cirque du soleil because she didn’t know any acrobatics.

Still, she offers 40 minutes of rhythmic and whimsical physical comedy — no language necessary — involving not just hiccups, but burps, farts, squirts, pings and plops.

This show is not part of the Kids Fringe, but it would fit there. Pre-teens will get some subversive laughs from the bathroom humour.

The mysterious Miss Hiccup lives alone, but is definitely not lonely. She is forever accompanied by a raucous cast of sounds and music that make her life an absurd adventure.

SHOSHINZ is Japanese for "shy, timid people," but this surreal Tokyo comedian will lure you in and bend your mind with brilliant physical theatre, dance, absurd music and song.
