Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION

A Fish's Wish

Dodger is an angelfish who has a tough time keeping up with his school chums because he is “built for looks and not for speed.” His buddy Beau has the lips of a young Angelina Jolie, and he has to keep reminding everyone that he’s “a dude.” Life at fish school can be kind of a pain, so why not seek out the legendary Wonderstar and see if a well-phrased wish can change a few things?

That’s the scenario for this dazzling black-light-and-neon underwater quest. This Winnipeg puppet production is populated with no fewer than 11 glow-in-the-dark characters, including a lively lobster and a too-handy octopus. Some work on the script could make the discovery of the Wonderstar and the lesson of the story quite a bit more satisfying, but most kids will be too preoccupied with the visuals and the fart jokes to mind very much.

From the official Fringe Festival program:

This is puppet theatre unlike any other!

Join Dodger the angelfish and his best friend Beau on a "blacklight" underwater adventure. Get swept away by the colourful song and dance of glowing seahorses, eels and jellyfish who guide Dodger and Beau closer to the mysterious wonderstar.

Visually stunning and wonderfully funny, A Fish's Wish will delight children and adults alike.

Warnings: We turn off the lights to make the puppets glow so this show may not be suitable for kids under 3.
