Two years after its 2010 fringe debut, Nova Dance Collective’s back with an eclectic mix that delves into “grit, darkness, beauty and sometimes the absurd.”
Its versatile co-founders, Zorya Arrow, Rachelle Bourget, Alexandra Garrido, Janelle Hacault, Sarah Helmer, Alexandra Scarola and Kelsey Todd, take turns choreographing, performing, composing, making costumes, films and poetry for this year’s bounty of eight contemporary works.
What this troupe does best is create strong stage pictures. Helmer’s head swaddled in a red gauzy hood during a moment of dystopia accents her angular, thrusting limbs. Hacault is cocooned in suspended, womb-like silks during Lament. Scarola staggers about the stage in a paint-spattered party dress in Orea. Some pieces, like The Presider, felt underdeveloped, while others seemed over in the blink of an eye.
Still, the all-encompassing creativity in Nova’s shows impresses. Kudos also to many of these dancers moonlighting in other fringe shows this week as a test of sheer physical stamina.

Nova Dance Collective is back at the Fringe Festival with their second original production. All seven founding members have joined together to create a brand new show of diverse, cross-genre vignette-style pieces interwoven with an overarching story of facing one's own darkness to reveal truth. Athletic, heart-felt and thought provoking, And Other Stories represents the members of Nova coming together in the time of their lives when discovery is paramount and risk is necessary.\
