Animelle! 1 euro per kilo
MTC Mainstage (Venue 1) to Saturday
From the program description, one goes into this Italian company’s 90-minute drama expecting either an overview of the scourge that is human trafficking, or an in-depth look at some of its victims. Neither is on offer in this trite, exploitative production, which gives short shrift to the women behind the epidemic.
There’s no plot or character development to speak of, just a series of episodes in which the women walk the streets, endure the abuse of their pimp, and drink vodka and dance half-naked (“Partial, non-offensive nudity in a poetic and dramatic context” reads the warning in the program. “Non-offensive” is a matter of taste, but there’s little poetic about the thongs and tube tops the actresses are made to wear even when they’re not working the corner).
The actors (there’s no program to name them) acquit themselves decently but with a script by Rocco Ricciardulli that offers contrived, melodramatic dialogue and pop-psychology explorations of motivation, and mistakes shock tactic for drama, they can’t win.

From the official Fringe Festival program:
"Today, everything is for sale?" Thousands of girls disappear every year, kidnapped and sold into organised crime rackets.
Animelle! 1 euro per kilo is the raw portrayal of this world. It is the desperate song of these fragile souls that are walking along the knife-edge of their dreams and their own death.
