Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
Back Where we Started
Planetarium Auditorium (Venue 10), to Friday
The promised 60 minutes is actually a fun-filled 45 in Winnipeg playwright Robyn Slade’s two-handed rom-com. Slade’s Maggie wakes up to find herself mysteriously roped up with estranged boyfriend Bennett (Shelby Bond). It doesn’t take long for them to reveal their bonds — not to mention their bruises — are simply a metaphor for their tangled relationship.
If that seems an obvious device, Slade and Bond have fun with it, using the rope as an all-purpose prop on the clutter-free set as the two lovers explore what went wrong. The comfortable, well-timed comic repartee between the two actors is the tie that really binds the performance to the audience. Hollywood rom-coms should be half as funny as this.
