Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION
Here’s a brand-new show featuring fringe veterans Tara Travis, Jon Paterson and Kurt Fitzpatrick, in which the three “perform” every Best Picture Oscar-winner in 60 minutes.
Perform is a misnomer, as what the show really does is make sure every winner’s name is dropped at some point. Ultimately, Best Picture is a pop-culture mishmash — Bing Crosby’s Father O’Malley from Going My Way visiting The Exorcist or Alec Guinness from The Bridge on the River Kwai morphing into Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. Yes, not all movies mentioned are Best Picture winners.
Funny as this is, and there are many genuine laughs to be had from this Vancouver/New York company, the clever premise hasn’t yet reached its full potential. A whole history of film is crammed into this 60 minutes, but one leaves wishing for a bit more quality over quantity.
