New Yorker Susan Jeremy, who first came to fringe attention in 1990 with the terrific one-woman ode to substitute teaching called P.S. 69, returns with a salty story called Brazil Nuts.
Fabiana, the soccer-loving Brazilian half of an American lesbian couple, is facing deportation if she doesn’t get married pronto. Her best prospect is a chaps-wearing male stripper who will do anything if the price is right.
The length the trio goes to trick U.S. immigration is mostly funny due to Jeremy’s exceptional comic chops and how she effortlessly plays the colourful members of her ménage a trois. As an American lesbian with a Brazilian girlfriend herself, Jeremy also succeeds in bringing attention to the peril faced by gay immigrants, who can be kicked out of the country because their marriages are not recognized by the U.S. government.
