Carolann Valentino comes out in a blaze of energy — big Stetson hat, tall slick black boots, brandishing great big provolone balls and a 100-watt smile.
But her 75-minute solo performance — of how she learned to follow her dream of being an entertainer instead of being a manager at a five-star steak restaurant in New York — fell curiously flat opening night, even with a crowd that was tapped every few minutes to perform up there with her.
The “Italian Rose of Texas” works so hard, singing and portraying about 18 characters who work at what is anything but a classy joint. But if this show represents livin’ the dream, it doesn’t look like much fun.
