MTC Up the Alley (Venue 2), to Saturday

Seeing Can’t Get Started might produce a feeling of déjà vu, either because it was a 2006 fringe entry or because everyone has seen a dozen permutations at past festivals.

Penned by Tom X. Chao, this comedy — and that’s a loose interpretation of the word, although there are funny bits — is about a playwright and an actress for whom he’s writing an audition piece. Hence, they perform a mixed bag of scenes linked by one slim thread: his loneliness.

Ubiquitous fringe performer Brent Hirose — he’s also in two other shows — plays Chao, with Anne Wyman as the actress. There’s plenty of meat for actors and the Winnipeg duo eats it up. But it’s skimpy fare for the audience.

— Pat St. Germain

From the official Fringe Festival program:

Anne Wyman (pornStar 5 STARS) returns as Sarah, the reluctant actress, in Tom X. Chao's unique exploration of male-female relationships.

Unendurable loneliness has never been funnier!

Past praise:

Edmonton Journal - 4 STARS
