Caught in the Act

It’s difficult to form attachments to characters when they’re half-formed.
That’s especially true of the duo in Bruce Kane’s 35-minute comedy about a couple of fictional characters trying to figure out why they’re in bed together. This two-hander from Morden’s The Company offers a slight variation of a notion covered more famously in Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author, or more recently the Will Ferrell movie Stranger Than Fiction.
The comedy scores a solid point about how fictional characters express the prejudices of their creator (the female is the first to figure out the author is male). But since the performances are a little stiff and theatrical, it’s doubly difficult to get onside with these nowhere people.
