Criminal Genius
Studio 320 (Venue 15), to July 24
A classic black comedy from the king of the genre, Canadian playwright George F. Walker, this is one high-octane local production. It’s the story of two totally unlovable losers, Rolly (a riveting William Jordan) and his son Stevie (Paul Duncan), who manage to bumble their way from peddling porn to kidnapping to arson and beyond.
As their crimes multiply, so do their bosses (ably played by Liz Madden and Kelly Jenken), until it seems everyone gets a good swift kick at the feckless pair.
The smart and silly script is about an f-sharp a second. And the volume needs to be turned down a bit in this intimate venue to let more of the bleak humour seep through. Did I say bleak? Wait till you find yourself giggling at Phillie’s (Ray Strachan) final soliloquy from the motel bathroom, an eloquent, pitiful f-you to the world.
