Winnipeg Free Press - ONLINE EDITION

Dale Beaner and the Turtle Boy

A baseball game is the backdrop for the disintegrating relationships between two bat-crazy fathers and their two sons, who are trying to wriggle out of their over-controlling paternal grips.

Aging child star Dale Beaner of the fictional TV show Family on a Boat, and George “the Turtle Boy” Brown, who was surgically fitted with a protective turtle shell at birth, are the young men in question.

Toronto wags Devon Hyland and Connor Thompson really sell the two cheerful sports announcer-types who relentlessly plug event sponsor Big Cat Facial Cream during the game, and gleefully play the fathers and sons in this well-timed, well-delivered comedy about extreme relationships between parent and child.

Some scenes go on too long and need trimming, and, unfortunately, the actors seem to lose their grip on their material toward the end of what is an otherwise goofy, often politically incorrect, but very funny show.

From the official Fringe Festival program:

A boy struggling to come to grips with celebrity. Another boy inside of a turtle shell as a security precaution. Baseball. Cupcakes. Need I go on? Cat cream. Enough? Well, why don’t you watch the show? It involves the original list off the top, and then the cat cream I mentioned later. The title? Dale Beaner and The Turtle Boy.
