Danny and the Deep Blue Sea

John Patrick Shanley’s violent, profane two-handed drama puts together Roberta and Danny, two damaged Bronx outcasts, first in a bar, then in a bedroom. Uncomfortable in their own skins, they take solace in each other’s flesh, an event that holds a long-shot hope for some kind of happiness.
Edmonton actors Melanie Godbout and Corey Schmitt take these tough roles by the throat (literally, on one occasion) and make you believe these impossibly alienated people could somehow find meaningful love in their lives. Godbout lacks the hard edge of her character, but that aside, she and Schmitt prove adept at nailing Shanley’s proffered blend of violent dysfunction and poignant tenderness.
