It’s been four long years, but everyone’s favourite German comedy-pop duo Die Roten Punkte (the Red Dots) have returned to Winnipeg on their Eurosmash! tour — and they’re as funny as ever.
The Berlin brother-sister combo featuring Otto and Astrid Rot (who are actually unrelated Australians Clare Bartholomew and Daniel Tobias) unveil hilarious new songs off their forthcoming Eurosmash! album in this 75-minute, high-energy cabaret. Driven by Astrid’s financial concerns, Die Roten Punkte is going for a more commercial sound these days (see: the on-point EDM number Do You Speak Dance?). Childlike Otto still wants to rock, though, and the two work out their tensions in their hysterical "stage banter."
Still, it’s not all phallic banana jokes. Eurosmash! is poignant, too. The duo’s touching rock opera about their fraught childhood reveals a sister who would do anything for her little brother — and reminds us that rock clubs are hallowed halls where we can sweat and dance in the dark, and be whoever we want.
