Don't Make Fun of Jesus

Sherri D. Sutton is a 40-something standup comedian from Atlanta via New York City. As she tells us in her raucous 65-minute act, she self-identifies as a “southern white trash Baptist lesbian.”

A high-energy performer who mocks everything from her sexual preference to her chunky frame, she also has a topical political instinct. Her left-wing tilt makes her a zany blend of blue-collar comedian Roseanne Barr and Texas journalist Molly Ivins.

Her show is essentially her life story as an outsider. When she’s funny, she’s hysterical — for example, in her multi-accented riff on racial stereotypes.

But when she’s maudlin, as in her overly personal recollections of her family, you wish she’d stick with the political jokes.
