Fool for Love

Sam Shepard’s dark treatise on the ties that bind is given a solid, stark rendering by Winnipeg’s Snakeskin Productions.

In a dreary motel room on the outskirts of the Mojave desert, May (Jane Walker) and Eddie (Ivan Henwood) hash through their history of love, loss and lies. Walker and Henwood admirably embody the tragic couple, imbuing them with a palpable, earthy desperation.

Although his part is small, Gary Jarvis gives Martin a sweet humanity as the unwitting foil whose appearance as May’s date acts as the catalyst for the truth of the story to be told.

Not so successful is director Chris Johnson’s turn as The Old Man, whose surreal presence within the action is hampered by Johnson’s wooden delivery. Thankfully, as a director Johnson holds this drama firmly on course, keeping melodrama at bay and honouring its dark heart.

From the official Fringe Festival guide:

Directed by Chris Johnson, Fool for Love is the tragedy of Eddie and May. In a cheap motel room, we witness them wrestle in a power struggle where identity is vague, time is cyclical, and memories are idealized and altered to suit the needs of the dreamer.
